Replying to Marie-Hélène Gaudreau (Bloc Québécois)
“Madam Speaker, I am very pleased to be back for this session. First off, it is important for me to say that today, we welcomed representatives from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers to Parliament Hill. There is a great deal of talk about jobs and what might happen at airports. Canada Post is facing a serious situation. Since September 25, 2025, it has been waiting to find out what will happen with the reform, and it is asking for a comprehensive public review of the corporation. We hope to get answers to these questions this fall. Here is the question I would like to put to my colleague. We are not seeking to undermine the purpose of reconciliation efforts. However, what is the point of this proposal if the commissioner will lack the teeth to take action and enforce compliance? What will we do when recommendations are made and the government refuses to listen?”

Madam Speaker, Aside · 27 wordsI hope the member opposite had a restful summer. It is always good to see our Bloc friends back in the House holding the government to account.AsideClaims · 28 wordsI do agree that this piece of legislation does not have the teeth necessary to see changes within the way government deals with such things as modern treaties.Procedure · 9 wordsWe have pointed it out time and time again.ProcedureClaims · 89 wordsIn fact, in the committee process, it came out that this piece of legislation would produce a report that would name and shame a government department not living up to its word.1The Auditor General already does that, but after that, there is still that lingering question of what actually happens.Does a government department get restructured?Does anyone lose their job?Are we seeing consequences in any meaningful form? The answer is no.What we found out at committee is that this might actually cause more court cases, 2Reasoning · 12 wordsand that is the opposite of what the government should be doing.Positioning · 4 wordsThat is not reconciliation.Positioning
