Comment rules and privacy
We want people to discuss what politicians say and do. Free discussion is the point, so we remove as little as possible.
What is allowed
You are free to share your perspective, disagree with other readers, and critique elected officials and their work. We do not take down comments because an opinion is controversial or because we do not share that view. The opinions posted here belong solely to the people who write them and do not represent Translate Politics.
What gets removed
- Spam. This means advertising, scams, links posted just to get clicks, the same message posted repeatedly, and accounts run by bots.
- Illegal content. This means content that breaks Canadian law, including threats, hate propaganda, child sexual content, and private details or intimate pictures shared without consent.
Accounts made only to post spam are blocked and their comments taken down. If people replied to a removed comment, their replies stay and the removed comment shows a short note in its place.
If a comment looks like spam, it may be held for review before others can see it, and you will see a note letting you know. Accounts that keep posting spam can be paused or suspended.
How to report a comment
Every comment has a Report button. You do not need an account to report. Choose Spam or Illegal, and add a short note if you like.
Reports are reviewed, and spam or illegal comments come down.
For urgent matters or legal requests, email contact@translatepolitics.ca.
What other people can see
Your display name and your comments are public. Anyone can read them, and search engines can show them. Your display name does not have to be your real name. We never show your email address to anyone.
Your privacy
You do not need an account to read. If you choose to comment, we keep your display name, your comments, any reports you submit, and your email address, which is only used to sign you in and is never shown publicly. If you sign in with Google we also keep the email and account ID Google gives us. A single cookie keeps you signed in, we run no ads or tracking scripts, and we never sell your information.
Like most sites, our server keeps basic visit logs, including IP addresses, for up to 14 days, and these are never linked to your account. We work with a few trusted service providers to help run the site, such as sending sign-in emails and checking for spam, and some of them are located outside Canada.
You can edit any comment for 10 minutes after posting and delete it at any time. From your account page, you can change your display name, download your information, or delete your account. Deleting your account removes your name and email, leaving your comments attributed to a deleted account. If a moderator removes a comment, we keep the text for our records. If you have questions or trouble signing in, please email contact@translatepolitics.ca.
