Replying to Kevin Waugh (Conservative)
“Mr. Speaker, I like our opposition day motion today because our motion is pretty simple. We have to cut diesel taxes and produce more fuel in this country. I heard a farmer from Weyburn, Saskatchewan, on the radio last week who said there has been a 100% increase in diesel prices year to year, and a 25% increase in diesel prices from August to now. This will come to consumers sooner or later. Why would the government not support our motion today? It would trickle down to the consumers.”

Mr. Speaker, Reasoning · 20 wordsone of the reasons why it is difficult to support this motion is because it fails to include many factors. Claims · 78 wordsIt does not take into account the fact that our oil industry is integrated with that of the United States.1 Canada and the United States have refineries that produce different types of products, like diesel, of course, using both light crude and heavy crude oils.2 Since our country as a whole is integrated with the United States, we cannot simply say that we are just going to lower prices. We depend on existing international markets and supply chains.3 Reasoning · 33 wordsWe therefore need to provide some relief. We need to have measures to improve the financial situation. We need to do so in the short term, while we build for the long term.Partly on point
