Replying to Vince Gasparro (Liberal)
“Mr. Speaker, the hon. member knows that I have a great deal of respect for him. I listened intently to his comments. He spent a great deal of time talking about process. I have to be clear. Canada’s government views this very clearly. Process is not the objective. Results and getting things done are the objective. Does the hon. member not agree that having a one-year time frame to approve major projects through a clear and predictable system that benefits the private sector and benefits labour, while respecting indigenous rights and the environment, is a good thing?”

Mr. Speaker, Thanks · 22 wordsI quite enjoy working with my hon. colleague on the operations committee. I think we have a mutual respect for each other. Thanks Claims · 110 wordsThe legislation clearly proposes a one-year approval period, 1but it would not be one year as, perhaps, the government is pretending or creating propaganda about. It would be one year after the approval process gets through, and the minister could still step in and extend that one-year period.2 It is kind of a fake one year that the government is pushing out. Before the member spoke, we were debating with the member for West Vancouver—Sunshine Coast—Sea to Sky Country, who was pushing for an oil and gas cap and could not even answer the question of whether he supported the very pipeline the government wants to build at taxpayers’ expense.3Partly on point Procedure · 4 wordsThis is the issue.ProcedureUnearned certainty Claims · 24 wordsThere is the paperwork, Partly on pointbut members of his own government are opposing the oil and gas that Bill C-39 is supposed to be helping.4
