Replying to Patrick Bonin (Bloc Québécois)
“Mr. Speaker, I would like my colleague to look at things from a slightly broader perspective because, clearly, one of the biggest factors affecting the price of groceries right now is the high cost of oil, of course, but more importantly, it is our dependence on oil. Building another pipeline will not bring down the cost of oil in Quebec. One way to reduce transport costs in Quebec would be to invest in the electrification of transportation. For an individual, it is about eight times cheaper to charge an electric vehicle than to fill up with gas. If we also look at the rising cost of groceries, which is clearly due to droughts and floods, why would my colleague not propose helping people electrify their vehicles and their homes, as the Quebec government wants to do?”

Mr. Speaker, Thanks · 9 wordsI appreciate the technical nature of the member’s question. Thanks Claims · 80 wordsTo be quite honest with him, though, most people are not driving diesel vehicles.1 The cost of diesel prices going up is impacting farmers, whose equipment runs on diesel, and the truckers who ship the food. There are examples of semi-tractor-trailers that are running on batteries, but the range is limited. I have yet to see a combine or tractor in the field running on batteries. When the technology gets there, that will be great. Maybe someday that will happen, Reasoning · 40 wordsbut in the meantime, tractors and combines have to run on diesel fuel. We need to bring the cost of diesel fuel down so that food costs less at the grocery store in the member’s constituency and everybody else’s constituencies.
