Replying to Patrick Bonin (Bloc Québécois)
“Mr. Speaker, I would like to know my colleague’s thoughts about the fact that oil, gas and LNG projects in this country are often majority foreign-owned. For example, LNG Canada phase 2 is 100% owned by foreign companies, including Shell from the U.K., Petronas from Malaysia and PetroChina from China, along with Mitsubishi and KOGAS. Another LNG project in Quebec is owned by Marinvest, a European company. The government created tax superdeductions for these projects in the last budget. They will probably also receive substantial government investment. Does my colleague support the government’s decision to encourage foreign ownership of projects here in Canada and in Quebec?”

Mr. Speaker, Thanks · 16 wordsthe member raises a good point about the role of foreign capital in the Canadian economy. Thanks Reasoning · 57 wordsI believe in free trade, and I believe that if companies invest responsibly in Canada, that is a good thing for Canada. Others might disagree with me, but I ultimately believe that, as a free market society, we need to encourage investment in a regulated environment that makes sure that it is a win-win deal for Canada.
