Replying to Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe (Bloc Québécois). The question was off topic, so this reply is judged against the bill.
“Mr. Speaker, this actually goes back to the question I just asked my hon. colleague. What I am hearing is that the government is not setting an actual date. My colleague is telling me that, yes, the date is specified in the bill, but what I just heard is that if the price goes down, the suspension of the excise tax would be lifted at that point. My colleague is telling me two things right now. Either we really have to believe the government when it gives us a date, or we have to listen and believe it when it says that it will reinstate the tax once prices go down. I do not know which one I am supposed to listen to or what I am supposed to make of this. Will the tax be reinstated when gas prices go down, or will it actually be reinstated on the date specified in the bill? It is not clear.”
