“Madam Speaker, I was at a press conference a few years back where we announced that the Hercules aircraft, through 435 squadron, was going to be replaced by the Kingfisher. The Kingfisher is going to be operational later this year for search and rescue. I am very much familiar with it because that is the branch I used to serve for when I was in the Canadian Forces, search and rescue, which was then based out of Edmonton and is now based out of the city of Winnipeg. At the end of the day, when we think of the Bank of Canada, the CBC and the post office, these are Crown corporations with a high sense of accountability. If we think of provincial Crown corporations, whether it is Manitoba Hydro, Hydro-Québec or autopac, they have proven to be very effective. We have a Prime Minister who has now raised our GDP military spending to 2%, higher than Stephen Harper ever even dreamed about. I think Stephen Harper one year raised it to 1%. Does the member not see that accountability can be held through Crown corporations?”
