Measures against online fraud

C-288 Protection Against Online Fraud Act: An Act to enact the Protection Against Online Fraud Act and to amend the Criminal Code

Requires online platforms to block fraudulent content and notify affected users, and adds sentencing factors for identity crimes against vulnerable people.

What Bill C-288 would do

The bill would create the Protection Against Online Fraud Act, requiring owners and operators of platforms like online services and apps to take steps to stop fraudulent content and to notify users who interacted with it. It would also amend the Criminal Code so judges consider it an aggravating factor in sentencing if identity theft or identity fraud targeted a person made vulnerable by factors like age, health, or financial situation.

Official summary
