Banning goods from forced labour

C-35 Ban on Importing Goods Made with Forced Labour Act: An Act respecting the prohibition of the importation of goods produced by forced labour

Bans importing goods made with forced labour and lets the government list suspected products.

What Bill C-35 would do

The bill would ban the importation of goods produced by forced labour. It would allow the Minister of Foreign Affairs to create a list of goods suspected of being made with forced labour. Importers bringing in goods on that list would have to give required information to the Canada Border Services Agency upon request, or the goods would be treated as banned from importation. The bill would also make related changes to the Customs Tariff.

Official summary

This enactment, among other things, (a) provides that goods produced by forced labour are prohibited from importation; (b) authorizes the Minister of Foreign Affairs to establish a list of goods in respect of which there are reasonable grounds to suspect that they are produced by forced labour; and (c) provides that a person importing goods on the list must, at the request of a customs officer, provide the Canada Border Services Agency with the required information, failing which the goods are deemed to be prohibited from importation. It also makes consequential amendments to the Customs Tariff .
