Mario Simard Bloc Québécois
“The federal government refuses to stand up to the United States to protect our softwood lumber industry. It also denies federal aid to this sector. This neglect has hurt our forestry industry and forced companies to merge.”
“Mr. Speaker, that is an excellent question. The answer is quite simple: The federal government has never been willing to fight for softwood lumber. We are at the mercy of the Americans. Not only that, but we also have an economic sector that is currently unable to access federal assistance, because it is constantly being referred to Global Affairs Canada and told no. What the federal government has been doing for the past few years is unconscionable. It has allowed the situation to deteriorate, and now we are facing deeply troubling consolidations in the forestry sector.”
