“Manitoba now recognizes Louis Riel as its first premier. I want my colleague to remind us what the federal government did to him. It is relevant to this bill about sending money to the provinces.”

Mr. Speaker, here we are discussing a bill that concerns unconditional transfers to the provinces and the topic of Manitoba comes up. I find that interesting. I had the opportunity to visit its legislative assembly in late summer. Interestingly, Louis Riel has finally been recognized as Manitoba’s first premier. I am drawing a blank. I would like my colleague to remind us what the federal government did to Louis Riel. I think the matter is relevant to a study of this bill.
