“The Minister of Justice is required by law to release a report showing how this bill affects Canadians' rights. A committee will soon study this bill without that report. We need to see how the bill affects workers' right to strike. Does the member agree the minister must release this report immediately?”
“Mr. Speaker, I certainly appreciate the member’s contributions on behalf of his community. I understand there have been significant job losses. My heart goes out to his community as they struggle to put food on the table and plan ahead. The member talked in his speech about those workers deserving care and respect, and they deserve to know that their rights are being taken seriously. Well, one way of doing that is, under subsection 4.2 of the Department of Justice Act, that the Minister of Justice is legally required to table a charter statement for every single government bill. The special legislative committee for Bill C-39 that will examine those rights that the member is concerned with will be starting its work very soon, but without that charter statement, we actually will not know of the evaluation by the Department of Justice on the government’s own provisions in Bill C-39 when it comes to section 107. Does the member believe that the Minister of Justice should, without any more wait, immediately table it so that parliamentarians and his constituents can see what the government has done in the bill when it comes to workers’ right to strike?”
