“I want the committee to watch this water bill carefully and listen to First Nations. They will be the ones who have to carry out this law. The government must not use tours to hide that this bill is weaker than the old one.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I am counting on my colleague from Edmonton Northwest to be the watchdog on this issue when witnesses come before the indigenous and northern affairs committee to speak on these issues. Access to a source of drinking water will also be a major issue. My colleague has a responsibility, as do all the members in the House, to think about first nations as well, because they will be the ones responsible for implementing this. There is a fundamental duty to listen. A ministerial tour that serves merely to conceal the step backward from Bill C‑61 to Bill C‑37 is not enough. There is a duty of vigilance, and I am counting on my colleague to uphold it.
