Discussion · Government Orders
Elizabeth May Green
“The government must keep its promises to Indigenous peoples. Swapping this water bill for a new one breaks trust and hurts reconciliation.”
“Madam Speaker, it makes me heartsick, because I did feel that we were making a lot of progress. Obviously as leader of the Green Party, I was never in a cheering line for everything that was done under former prime minister Justin Trudeau, but I did have a sense that there was a deeper understanding of the imperative of reconciliation. Reconciliation has to be the work primarily of settler culture people. We are all treaty peoples, one way or another, but we have an obligation as settler people to actually live up to our words. The switcheroo of words between Bill C-61 and Bill C-37 will undermine any confidence indigenous peoples, first nations, Métis or Inuit have in the idea that settler culture people keep their word.”
