“The bill sets an end date for cutting the gas tax. But the government says the cut will last until gas prices drop. I want to know what happens if prices stay high by that date. Will they extend the tax cut again and make it permanent?”
“Mr. Speaker, let us put aside the Conservative Party’s populist rhetoric. We have gotten used to it. In fact, it cost them many seats in Quebec. There are few of them left. I do not even know if there are even 10 of them. Here is what I wanted to ask my Liberal colleague. What happens if gas prices have not come down by the date set out in the bill? What he is saying is that the tax will be suspended until prices come down, yet the bill still sets a date. If prices have not come back down, will the bill as drafted still stand, or will he once again choose to extend the measure, ultimately turning what was supposed to be a temporary measure into a permanent one? That is my main question. If the price of gas has not dropped at Christmas and in April, will he maintain the measure proposed today?”
