Mario Simard Bloc Québécois
“The government's $600-million plan makes all taxpayers pay, even if they do not use web giants like Netflix. Big tech companies make $4 billion a year, but they have no obligations to Quebec customers and are hurting our cultural sector. This is unfair, and the government should hold these companies accountable.”
“Mr. Speaker, the House leader of the Bloc Québécois gave a very good answer to a question about that earlier today. The $600 million that the government has proposed, but that no one has seen yet, will be paid by all taxpayers. Taxpayers who have no interest in Netflix or in these web giants will be forced to foot part of the bill. They will have no choice. Personally, I will never understand how companies that are raking in $4 billion a year can have no obligations whatsoever towards customers in Quebec who pay for their services, while at the same time those companies are being allowed to completely dismantle our cultural sector. This is an unacceptable injustice. In a few years’ time, the government will have to answer for this negligence.”
