Mario Beaulieu Bloc Québécois

“The government has the wrong priorities for official languages. It spends all $120 million of Quebec's language support money to strengthen English, even though French is the language under threat. It is also cutting 340 jobs at the Translation Bureau, which we need for bilingual work in Parliament. I want to know what my colleague thinks about this.”

Madam Speaker, I also think this government’s priorities are misplaced. For example, the entire budget for official languages support programs in Quebec, which was $120 million last year, is dedicated to strengthening English in Quebec, even though French is the language under threat. The government also says it has no money for the Translation Bureau, so it plans to make cuts and eliminate 340 positions through attrition at the Translation Bureau, which is essential to ensuring access to both official languages here in Parliament. What does my colleague think of that?
