“The government collects far more taxes now than it did five years ago, but it still spends much more than it takes in. Debt payments are so high that they will soon cost more than everything collected through the sales tax. This leaves less money for health care and the military. I want the member to explain where all that extra tax money went.”
“Madam Speaker, back in 2020, government tax revenue was $284 billion. In 2025, it is $417 billion. The GST went from $32 billion to $52 billion. The amount of money the government has racked up in debt means that a lot of money is going to be spent on debt servicing charges. The GST that is currently being collected is not even enough to cover the debt servicing charges, let alone things like health care transfers to the province, military spending and things like that, which Canadians are expecting. I very simply ask the member, with the government set to blow the debt servicing charges all the way up to $83 billion in the coming years, and with all the extra tax revenue the government has been generating, where did the money go? Why is the government running such a massive deficit if it has increased tax revenue by over $130 billion in five years?”
