“We must manage public money well and take care of people. The Conservative leader called school breakfast programs bureaucratic and child care spending wasteful. I want the member to tell us if he agrees with his leader.”
“Mr. Speaker, I believe, as he suggests, that we do need to ensure sound management of public finances. I also believe that we need to take care of people. I know the member across the way is relatively new here, so I would like to welcome him to the House, if somewhat belatedly. He may have heard his leader describe the support provided by breakfast clubs in his own riding as “bureaucratic” or suggest that feeding children is bureaucracy. I would like to know whether the member agrees with him. His leader also said that investing in child care is wasteful. Why is it wasteful? I have never understood why, but I would like to know. I would also like to know whether the member agrees with his leader’s position that investing in affordable, high-quality child care is a waste of money.”
