“Interest costs are going up all around the world. Canada is handling this well. We have the lowest debt compared to the size of our economy in the G7, our top credit rating keeps borrowing costs low, and our deficit is going down.”

Mr. Speaker, here is what Canadians watching us need to know about interest charges: They have increased, but they have increased around the world. Given the rise in rates that the whole world has experienced, the real question is this: Who is weathering it best? That is the real question, not whether interest charges have exceeded health transfers. As I just said, Canada has the lowest net debt‑to‑GDP ratio in the G7 and a AAA credit rating. That rating is what keeps our borrowing costs as low as possible. In addition, our deficit is on a downward path.
