“The Liberals are avoiding a serious talk about how to get immigration right. Immigration is about numbers, but it is also about recognizing skills. When the government does not recognize newcomers' skills, they have to compete with young people for beginner jobs. That hurts newcomers, young workers, and the whole economy. The Liberals need to stop deflecting and take responsibility for their failures.”

Mr. Speaker, I want to pick up on this discussion about immigration, because there is a total lack of nuance and seriousness in the discussion on this issue from the Liberals across the way. They are just trying to dodge having an important, substantive and genuinely nuanced conversation about how to get immigration right. As my colleague spoke about, yes, it is about the numbers, and it is also about categories and skill recognition. When somebody comes here who has specific skills that they could put to use in the economy, and, instead, this government fails to recognize their skills and forces them to compete for entry-level jobs, that is bad for the newcomer, that is bad for the young people they are competing against, and that is also bad for those who could benefit from their skills, if done at a higher level. It is about getting the categories right, it is about recognizing skills and it is about shaping the policy in a nuanced way, rather than this attempt at Liberal demagoguery to avoid being accountable for their own failures.
