“I support this bill. Parents should not have to protect their kids from internet dangers on their own. National rules for social media would set standards for everyone and take that burden off individual families.”
“Mr. Speaker, I shared this reflection earlier in response to a different question from a different colleague. At the moment, many parents across this country share these concerns. We know the dangers that await our kids on the Internet, and we are concerned in particular about increasingly young children having access to unfiltered information through the devices that are increasingly common in their classrooms. Having parents bear the responsibility to monitor their children’s Internet use, but also to control their access to digital devices, really does individualize this problem. It makes it a problem for individual families and for individual parents. As all parents know, our kids are extremely good at placing pressure on us to come to their preferred outcome or decision. By having strong regulations at the national level, by having a national framework around social media use for young Canadians, individual families would no longer have to make this choice. As a society, we would draw a line and say that enough is enough.”
