“The government has backed down on tech taxes before so it would not upset big tech companies. Big tech companies do not like bills like this, and they have influence with the United States government. Can the member promise that the government will not back down if the United States pressures us to drop this bill?”

Mr. Speaker, I would love to hear my colleague’s perspective. I do have one concern. In the past, I have seen the government back down on things like the digital services tax and the levies so as not to upset the tech giants, which have privileged access to President Trump. We know that legislation like this can be unpopular with big tech. Lawsuits have been brought against such measures in the United States. Is my colleague sure that the government will not back down if the U.S. government decides to exert pressure to block this kind of legislation?
