Alexis Deschênes Bloc Québécois
“I oppose this bill. Protecting youth and making social policy belong to Quebec, not Canada. The federal government ignored Quebec's work on social media and screens, which shows Canada does not listen to Quebec.”
“Mr. Speaker, I appreciate my colleague’s contribution to this debate. He and I are committed sovereignists. We will always feel constrained within Canada. We believe that only independence will allow Quebeckers to express themselves fully and to develop public policies that truly reflect their values and priorities. Now, we can see that, before drafting Bill C‑34, the government completely ignored the work that had already been done in Quebec, particularly by the special committee tasked with studying the impact of screens and social media on youth health and development, as well as the possible solutions already being discussed within Quebec in an area of exclusive provincial jurisdiction, namely youth protection and social policy. Does my colleague not feel a little sorry for our federalist friends today, as they try to convince us that there will always be a place and a listening ear for Quebec within Canada?”
