“Mr. Speaker, laws often lag behind a changing society . Twenty years ago, we did not have to deal with social media, but now we need to create new laws to regulate it. We need to make sure that our young people are able to surf the Internet safely and that any non-consensual images are taken down. We have to make sure of that. These things did not exist 20 or 30 years ago. The bill will help us to regulate this phenomenon. I am deeply troubled to know that deepfakes and images that young people did not consent to share are being posted on social media. This causes enormous harm to these young people and these women. The bill will be sent to committee. We will hear from experts and we will move forward. I am sure that we will find a solution that everyone can agree on.”
