“Social media companies must be required to follow the rules, and they must face penalties if they do not. Without penalties, rules are just suggestions. We need this bill to protect children, and big international companies will not stop us.”
“Mr. Speaker, the short answer is yes. However, it is not just about cooperation. It is also an obligation, one that has to come with penalties. When obligations are imposed without accompanying penalties, then they are just a suggestion. That is not the intent of Bill C-34, quite the contrary. The bill aims to protect our children. Everyone knows as well as I do that protecting our children is essential. International companies will not stand in the way of the government’s determination.”
