“I will vote for this bill so it goes to committee. I want to change it there to make the penalties much stronger. Social media company leaders should risk going to jail if a child in Canada is harmed.”

Mr. Speaker, I respect enormously the fact that the member is an engineer. I am a lawyer. I look at this bill and ask why we do not tighten it to create a real incentive for tech giants to live up to the duty to protect our children, enforceable by law. By attaching that duty specifically to the directors of the companies, they would feel a real incentive to avoid ending up with strict liability and going to jail if a child in Canada is harmed. I want to put forward amendments to that effect when we get to committee. I will vote for the bill to get to committee. We need to tackle this. I wonder if she has any thoughts on the idea of tightening up the punishments.
