“We must protect children online, but we also must protect people's free speech. This bill needs more work. It should go to committee so we can hear from experts, witnesses, and child advocates. I worry this bill will not keep up with how fast artificial intelligence is changing.”
“Madam Speaker, I think I made it very clear, in the 10 minutes I had, how important it is to protect our children. We also have to make sure that we are not doing that at a cost to civil liberties and rights, especially for law-abiding people, to express themselves online. We have to find that balance. Bill C-34 has a lot more work to do. It will go to committee. We will hear from experts. We will hear from witnesses who are concerned about both sides of the issue. We will certainly hear from child advocates. Of course, we support that. The other thing is that it is a rapidly changing environment with artificial intelligence, chatbots and everything. My biggest fear is that this legislation will not keep up enough for the changes that are coming. This is certainly something we heard at the ethics committee. We heard how rapidly artificial intelligence is occurring, and we are going to have to be nimble to make sure that we make the changes that are necessary in this rapidly evolving environment of artificial intelligence online.”
