“Doctors and public health experts agree that social media is hurting children. Emergency rooms are seeing record numbers of young people with anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts caused by it.”
Official Hansard

Madam Speaker, I have rarely seen such uniformity among not only the public health community but the medical community at large, including the front line. We are hearing from pediatricians and emergency physicians who are seeing the effects. I remember the minister remarking when presenting this legislation that emergency physicians are asking to see more broken bones and fewer broken souls. This speaks to the uniformity of consensus on the public health effects on children. Anxiety, depression, cyber-bullying, even self-harm and suicide are occurring at rates never seen since the promulgation of this social media blitz.
