“Government spending caused the Bank of Canada to raise interest rates, and that will increase mortgage costs. People in my riding are already struggling, including seniors on fixed incomes who now need food banks. The government is ignoring this worsening problem.”

Mr. Speaker, in response to the Liberals’ inflationary spending, the Bank of Canada this week raised interest rates for the first time in three years. This interest rate hike will hit residents in the communities that I represent hard. This increase directly affects mortgage rates. They will go up. I represent one of the eldest ridings in Canada, with many fixed-income seniors already juggling mortgages, credit lines and the need to drive to medical appointments. We are already seeing seniors who used to donate to food banks now standing in line at food banks. The Liberals are ignoring the fact that this affordability crunch is getting worse, with benefits and savings struggling to keep up and seniors just trying to afford to put food on the table.
