“We should not allow assisted dying for people with only a mental illness. Expert doctors agree we should not move forward with this. Moving ahead without their support would be reckless and dangerous for vulnerable people.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, on the question of mental illness and MAID, I sat on all of the special joint committees in this Parliament and in the last Parliament. In the last Parliament, 17 chairs of psychiatry wrote to the Minister of Justice calling on the minister to delay implementation of MAID where mental illness is the sole underlying condition. Today, if there is a consensus among experts, among psychiatrists, it is to not move ahead with this. On a question of life and death involving some of the most vulnerable persons in Canadian society, I would put it to the hon. member that moving ahead with this, lacking consensus among leading psychiatrists and other experts, would be reckless.
