Taxation

During Question Period on taxation, a Conservative member said the government was listening more to European visitors than to farmers whose land would be needed for the high-speed rail project, and asked the government to remove federal taxes on diesel. The Liberal reply said the party would continue listening to farmers about the rail project and fuel costs, and pointed to an existing cut to the fuel tax for farmers that had been extended.Written by AI from the debate. “The government is ignoring farmers whose land will be taken for high-speed rail to help European interests instead. I want the government to remove federal taxes on diesel.”

Mr. Speaker, farmers along the high-speed rail route want to be heard by the Liberal government, and they deserve to be heard. However, it seems that the government listens more to visitors from Europe. What is wrong with this picture? The Liberals are silencing Canadians whose land will be expropriated by European-style projects that have no guarantee of long-term profitability. When will this Liberal government do something about Canadians’ suffering by axing the federal taxes on diesel?

Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons

Liberal
“The Conservatives oppose a project that will help Quebec. We will keep listening to farmers about high-speed rail and fuel costs. We already cut the fuel tax for farmers and extended that cut.”

Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, it should come as no surprise that the Conservatives are doubling down on their opposition to a promising project that will benefit all Quebeckers. Of course we will continue to listen to the agricultural community when it comes to building high-speed rail. We will also continue to listen to the agricultural community when it comes to the cost of fuel. We have cut the tax and we have extended that cut in fuel prices for the farming community. We will continue to listen.
