Community Leader in Mississauga East—Cooksville

“I want to recognize my constituent, Alessia Commisso. She lives with Leigh syndrome, volunteers at major soccer events, and studies event management. Her work inspires our community and our country.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize one of my constituents, Alessia Commisso, an extraordinary young Canadian whose courage, determination and generosity are an inspiration to all of us. Living with Leigh syndrome, a rare and progressive disease that has affected her mobility and sight, Alessia refuses to let challenges define her future. As a volunteer at Toronto’s FIFA World Cup activities, she helped fans navigate the stadium and experience the excitement of the world’s game. Her dedication earned her the recognition of being one of Toronto’s FIFA World Cup 2026 Unsung Heroes. Alessia is pursuing studies in event management at Humber Polytechnic and dreams of helping organize major events herself. She reminds us that true greatness is not measured by the obstacles we face, but by the difference we make in the lives of others. I am proud to recognize Alessia Commisso and her remarkable contribution to our community and to Canada.

PSA Detect and Protect

“I am thanking the University Health Network and the Walnut Foundation for bringing free prostate cancer tests to Ottawa. Many men wait too long to get tested, especially Black men over 40. This program makes it easier to get checked early, which can save lives.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize the outstanding work of the University Health Network and the Walnut Foundation, which are bringing their important PSA Detect and Protect program to Ottawa. They are making free PSA testing more accessible in the community and helping raise awareness about prostate cancer, particularly among Black men over the age of 40. Too often, men put off getting tested. This community-based approach is helping overcome barriers to screening, encouraging men to take an active role in their health. I want to recognize Dr. Neil Fleshner and the entire UHN team, and Anthony Henry, president of the Walnut Foundation, along with the volunteers and community partners who make these clinics possible. Their message is one we should all remember. Early detection can save lives. I thank the Walnut Foundation and UHN for bringing this life-saving work directly into our communities.

Canadian Fuel Affordability Act

“Lowering the tax on gas helps people in my riding afford to drive to work and take their kids to sports. Can the member say more about how this helps people save money?”
Official Hansard

Madam Speaker, just listening to the member, I think vividly of my riding. As people go to the gas pump, for the average resident and consumer in Mississauga East—Cooksville, that means a reduction in the price of gas they are paying. They need gas to get to work. They need it to take their kids to sports. They need it for everything they do. It is so important to have these affordability measures. The member has mentioned many other measures. He has talked about the school nutrition program, about how we are also helping with senior supports and about the dental program. When it comes to gas, this is something that affects everybody every single day. Can the member elaborate on that?

Portuguese Heritage Month

“June is Portuguese Heritage Month, and today is Portugal Day. I am celebrating what Portuguese Canadians have done for Canada.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, this June, we proudly mark Portuguese Heritage Month, an important time to recognize and celebrate the meaningful contributions of Canadians of Portuguese descent. Today, June 10, is Portugal Day, celebrated in Portugal and by Portuguese communities around the world. For me as a Portuguese Canadian, this day holds deep significance, offering a moment of pride and reflection on shared history, culture and the many achievements of Portugal and its people. For over seven decades, Portuguese Canadians have helped shape the Canada we know today. As our people-to-people ties continue to thrive, so too does the Canada-Portugal relationship, strengthened by shared values, growing economic partnerships and a common passion for the beautiful game that unites us and the world forever. As we celebrate this month, we honour the enduring legacy, resilience and achievements of the Portuguese Canadian community. Feliz Dia de Portugal. Viva Canada. Viva Portugal.
