Medical Assistance in Dying

During question period, the topic of medical assistance in dying came up. A Liberal member asked about Bill C-41, the medical assistance in dying safeguards act, which would let adults with an incurable illness make an advance request for medical assistance in dying while they are still able to make their own decisions. The minister’s parliamentary response said the bill would ensure a person’s wishes are followed later, that strict rules would apply at every step, and that provinces would decide whether to offer the option.Written by AI from the debate. “Our new bill lets adults with incurable illnesses ask for medical assistance in dying in advance, with strict rules in place. I want the Minister of Justice to explain how this bill helps these people and their families.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, when Canadians are diagnosed with an incurable illness, many wish to make decisions about their future care while they are still able to make the decisions themselves. This week, our government introduced Bill C-41, the medical assistance in dying safeguards act, which would allow adults to request medical assistance in dying in advance, subject to strict safeguards. Can the Minister of Justice explain to the House what this bill does to support these people and their families?

“This bill lets a person make an advance request for medical assistance in dying while they can still decide for themselves. That makes sure their wishes are followed later. There will be strict rules at every step, and provinces will decide if they want to offer this option.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague for the question and for his work on this very important file. When someone is diagnosed with an incurable illness, it is very hard on them and their entire family. Under this bill, a person could make an advance request while they are still able to decide for themselves. This will ensure that their wishes are honoured later on. There will be strict safeguards at every stage. The provinces will decide whether to offer this option, and we will work with them.
