Replying to Kelly McCauley (Conservative)
“Mr. Speaker, my colleague brought up a lot of very valid points. One of them, of course, is that there is not a lot of structure. Despite the bill being 250 pages, there are a lot of areas where it would allow the bureaucracy or the ministers to make additional decisions. What is going to be in the national interest? Someone is going to be allowed to extend this magical one-year permit timeline at any time. I wonder if my colleague could spend a bit of time explaining the need to have clear direction in the rules and not allow so much leeway for ministers, the government or bureaucrats to mess around with the legislation.”

Mr. Speaker, Thanks · 5 wordsthat is an excellent question. Thanks Claims · 43 wordsIn fact, it is something that the President of the United States has been criticized for: governing by executive order by giving himself powers that would otherwise have been counterbalanced by lawmakers. That is exactly what the government is doing with this bill. Positioning · 17 wordsTo protect ourselves from Donald Trump, we are turning into Donald Trump. That is a terrible idea.Positioning Claims · 94 wordsThe government is doing this under the pretense of boosting the economy and dealing with a situation that is likely to change in the short term, or so we hope. Nevertheless, the government is repealing the five-year sunset clause that was previously put in place.1 Significant changes are therefore becoming permanent and, to top it all off, the government is making these changes in an omnibus bill that combines environmental law with labour law.2 All this is being done under the pretense of dealing with a crisis that we hope will soon be over.
