Replying to David Myles (Liberal)
“Mr. Speaker, I look forward to working in committee with the member for Drummond and with the member for Lethbridge to do this work. I just heard my colleague say that this is an extremely important issue in Canada right now. I believe we share the same concerns, not only as Canadians, but also as parents. I also have teenagers, so I understand where the member for Drummond is coming from. Given this spirit of openness and given the concerns we share, I am wondering what you think will be the biggest challenges we will face in committee as we work to develop a law that works for Canadians.”

Mr. Speaker, Aside · 16 wordsI thought the question was for you. That was my understanding. No? Then I will answer.Aside Thanks · 16 wordsThat is an excellent question, and I thank my colleague, the parliamentary secretary, for asking it.Thanks Reasoning · 131 wordsI think we are going to run into a number of challenges. The biggest challenge we may face is pleasing everyone. Based on the correspondence that we have received regarding Bill C-34, some people’s opinions already seem rather entrenched. I think we need to create an environment conducive to open and respectful dialogue, where we listen to opinions that require us to adjust our positions on different aspects of the bill.Vague promise In my opinion, the challenge lies in coming up with a bill we can all agree on, a bill that offers something for everyone so the final result suits everyone’s needs. It will be a challenge, which is why I say it will need to be a collaborative undertaking that is carried out responsibly and in a spirit of co-operation.
