“Madam Speaker, Miriam from my riding has said that becoming a new parent recently has made her so scared of how quickly social media is changing. She hopes her son grows in a world with a safer Internet space. She can only protect him so much. Every other product a child uses had to meet a safety standard before it reaches them. There are car seats. There are medicines and there are toys. When he grows older and would like a phone, she is scared of how much access he will get to an unregulated online world. When it comes to kids’ safety, the apps on phones are the one exception not required to meet a safety standard. I just wanted to ask the member for her thoughts on what Miriam said.”
