Mr. Speaker, this year we are celebrating the 100th birthday of Suzanne Guité. This great, internationally renowned artist from the Gaspé was born in New Richmond and based in Percé. Suzanne Guité was a sculptor, painter and muralist who trained under international masters. In 1956, she founded the Centre d’art de Percé. She made a name for herself in North America and Europe, from Expo 67 to the Venice Biennale. Admitted to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1975, she was recognized this summer as a historical figure of Quebec. From the mural La Justice est l’Espoir de l’Homme at the New Carlisle Courthouse to her work Terre des hommes along the Rideau Canal here in Ottawa, Ms. Guité’s presence still fills our spaces. Let us pay tribute to her and remember a woman who left us far too soon under horrific circumstances. I join the people of the Gaspé in calling for a postage stamp to be issued in her honour.
