Replying to Pierre Poilievre (Conservative)
“Mr. Speaker, the member had trouble following what is a very clear and direct path to make life affordable. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line, and the straight line is this. They get rid of all taxes on gas and immediately start saving people 20¢ a litre. They cancel the reinstallation of the excise tax and it goes up to almost 30¢ a litre. That will save a Canadian family $1,200. This is an immediate action the government can take to save money for Canadians. Will it do it in the budget?”

Mr. Speaker, let me help the member opposite. He could have voted for the groceries and essentials benefit and saved a family of four $1,900. He could have voted for the child benefit and saved families $7,000 a year. He could have voted for child care and saved families $16,000 a year. He could have voted for a tax cut and saved families another $840 a year. He voted against every single one of those affordability measures. We will take no lessons from him on affordability.
