Replying to Michael Guglielmin (Conservative)
“Mr. Speaker, I cannot understand for the life of me why the minister cannot answer the very simple question. The father of the family who just suffered the violent home invasion in Toronto said the following: “It is difficult to put into words the trauma of experiencing something so horrific in the one place where everyone should feel safest: their own home.” That is why we put these two bills before the House. This is a very simple question. Canadians deserve a very clear answer. Will the Liberals support these two pieces of legislation that we have before the House so we can protect Canadians, yes or no?”

Mr. Speaker, first of all, we send our deepest condolences to the family impacted by this horrific incident. All of us in this House share the need for safety and security in someone’s home. However, I will be very clear: We brought forward significant legislation, the most comprehensive criminal justice legislation in a generation, including stronger sentencing as well as bail reform and including protection of victims’ rights. These are critical pieces of legislation that will ensure the safety and security of Canadians over the long term.
