Replying to Mario Beaulieu (Bloc Québécois)
“Mr. Speaker, the Liberal government has adopted a buy Canadian policy. The Prime Minister has told Canadians that he wants to make Canada its own best customer. Despite this, the government’s actions tell a very different story. Since the Prime Minister took office, six of the 10 largest contracts have been awarded to federal suppliers headquartered in the United States. The Toronto Star reported that the Liberal government has awarded billions of dollars’ worth of contracts to American companies. The total now stands at $7.8 billion, according to their data, and the share of contracts going to U.S.-based firms continues to increase. How does my colleague explain that?”

Mr. Speaker, I do not necessarily know the details. The member just brought it forward to the House, at least as far as I have heard. At the end of the day, I believe that we need to look at the company that received this. It is a subsidiary of an American company. There are many subsidiaries here in Canada with headquarters in the United States, and vice versa. We have headquarters here in Canada where they have subsidiaries in the United States. What is important is the footprint that the subsidiaries have. My understanding is that we are talking about thousands of employees, some of them in Winnipeg.
