Replying to Marie-Hélène Gaudreau (Bloc Québécois)
“Mr. Speaker, I want to acknowledge all the work my colleague did during the year that we served together, as well as the work he did alongside my Bloc Québécois predecessor. My colleague genuinely cares about the treatment of veterans and is deeply committed to recognizing their service. Indeed, my first thought when I joined this committee was to wonder why no action was being taken, even though people wanted what was good for veterans. Since 2015, there have been nine veterans affairs ministers. That says something. Does my colleague agree with me that an announcement like that is deeply hurtful to veterans? The government cannot claim to be supporting veterans when its actions send the message that they are no longer needed and can be readily replaced. Does my colleague agree with me?”

Mr. Speaker, I would agree. We see so many of these kinds of things. We see it in what we are talking about today with this contract, when the Liberals were warned that this would be the result. We see it in the lack of action towards building a monument to the mission in Afghanistan and the 158 Canadians who gave their lives there. We see it in the denials and delays when it comes to the benefits that veterans are entitled to. We see it throughout so many things. We remember that the Liberals tried to take away the Remembrance Day wreaths. They have taken away the ability for prayer at Remembrance Day services. The list goes on and on. I always say we judge someone not by their words but by their actions. If we judge the current government by its actions, it is clearly failing our veterans.
