Replying to Dane Lloyd (Conservative)
“Mr. Speaker, this issue about the contract with the Commissionaires and Allied Universal is not just about veterans’ jobs. The Corps of Commissionaires is a non-profit corporation, and the excess revenues that it produces beyond wages are primarily sent toward benevolent funds and charitable causes. These include its national bursary program as well as sponsorship for veterans’ organizations like the No Stone Left Alone Memorial Foundation, military family resource centres and the Royal Canadian Legion. When this government saves a buck by going with a for-profit company, it is actually undermining many charitable causes in this country. I am hoping the member can address that concern.”

Mr. Speaker, we continue to recognize the contribution that an organization like the Commissionaires makes to veterans’ employment opportunities. We also recognize everything they do for the Royal Canadian Legion. On that note, I would point out that many legion branches are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year, making this a truly special occasion. I would like to highlight the various ceremonies that will be held across Canada, including the one at the Sherbrooke War Memorial, the angel on King Street hill that everyone knows. The legion is marking its centennial this year and continues to organize countless activities to honour the contribution of our military personnel. Legion branches play an exceptionally important role in our communities. That is yet another reason to take part in Remembrance Day ceremonies over the coming days and weeks.
