Replying to Mario Beaulieu (Bloc Québécois)
“Mr. Speaker, I find it somewhat disheartening to see the Liberals justify hiring Allied Universal instead of the Commissionaires, formerly known as the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. Why is that? The government is shirking its responsibilities by saying that the decision was made by the CRA rather than by the Liberals themselves. Given the proliferation of agencies we are seeing these days, that is worrisome. The Commissionaires, a non-profit organization that already provides security for federal buildings, has 22,000 employees, including 3,500 military and RCMP veterans. What does buy Canadian mean to my colleague, exactly?”

Mr. Speaker, my colleague is giving me the opportunity to talk about a number of contracts that are having an impact in my riding. I would like to talk about IBM, an American company that has been operating in Canada for nearly 110 years, including next door to my riding, in the riding of my colleague from Brome—Missisquoi. It is one of the companies that receives many of the contracts awarded in the United States, but that have a major impact in Canada. Many people in Bromont work for that company. These are excellent jobs, and this is the type of business that the government wants to support because high-quality, high-tech jobs in our communities are extremely valuable.
