Mr. Speaker, this week, Sikh Canadians marked the anniversary of the 1984 Sikh genocide, when thousands of Sikhs were killed in state-sponsored violence in the country they called home. In November 1984, Darshan Singh Grewal and his pregnant wife, Tejinder Kaur, were living in Indore with their two children. Their home was stormed by an armed mob and set on fire. Darshan Singh was murdered. His children survived because their Hindu neighbour hid them under their bed. This was the story all over India. Thousands of Sikh men were dragged from their homes and burned alive. Women were assaulted and gurdwaras were attacked. Tejinder Kaur lost her husband and everything they had, yet she bravely raised her daughters, and today this family proudly calls Calgary home. Forty-two years later, the families are still being denied justice. Today, we honour Sardar Darshan Singh Grewal and all the victims who were brutally murdered in the 1984 Sikh genocide.
