Mr. Speaker, on November 8, members of the Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist communities across Canada will celebrate Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas. Diwali is a festival of lights. It celebrates the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. It is a time for new beginnings, for hope and for bringing communities together. This weekend, families across the country will light up diyas, offer prayer and share sweets with their neighbours. For Sikhs, Bandi Chhor Divas is the day of liberation. In 1619, Shri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji refused to leave prison unless 52 of his imprisoned colleagues were freed with him. His example reminds us that we must do what is right even when it is hard, and we must always stand with those who are struggling or in need. I wish everybody in northeast Calgary and across Canada a happy Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas.
