Replying to Marilyn Gladu (Liberal)
“Mr. Speaker, I think the member opposite would agree that we are at a stage in our defence where the cupboard is bare and we have to quickly procure all the things that are needed. We are buying planes, we are buying boats and we are buying munitions. There are all kinds of efforts on the go. Does he not feel that we need to put resources in place to put us in a place where we can better defend the country?”

Mr. Speaker, the answer is yes. In the last election, we put forward a plan to spend judiciously but spend a lot more on getting a new base built in Iqaluit. It has been over a year and a half since the last election. What has the government done as far as spending goes? It has created a bunch of agencies. How do we spend? Should we spend? What should we spend? How do we measure that spending? How do we get people connected to the government who are effectively going to make these decisions? We are creating another bureaucracy, as opposed to getting things out the door. All things considered, I know there have been some successes, so I do not mean to say that there is only bad happening. However, this opens the door to another bad structure and a lot of money going off the table.
