Replying to Arpan Khanna (Conservative)
“Mr. Speaker, I think we all agree on the mental illness component of the bill, and my colleague highlighted that there have been great discussions and great studies at committees, both at the Senate and in this chamber. However, on advance requests, there have been no studies, no debates and no conversations that we have seen in the House, and it seems that the government is rushing through something that should not be rushed, especially when it comes to matters of life or death. Can the member stand up and tell us why the government is trying to ram something through instead of working with us, passing the mental illness component to satisfy the time restriction we have of March 2027 and listening to experts before it puts policy forward?”

Mr. Speaker, of course, the minister consulted with Canadians. Someone who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease suffers tremendously, especially toward the end of their life. They lose capacity in many functions in their body, and it is only fair that they get the right to decide to die with dignity if they so choose.
