“Mr. Speaker, I want to quote Stefanie Green, who is a practitioner, on the issue of MAID. This goes back to the case of Ms. Rodriguez, which dates back to 1991, when the debate was ongoing in Canada. “After learning what lay ahead for her, she wanted a doctor to be able to give her medication to end her life when she felt the time was right, so that her death could be quick and certain.” She then goes on to quote Ms. Rodriguez: “If I cannot give consent to my own death, whose body is this? Who owns my life?” I note that because it is important that we recognize that the debate on this in Canada has been going on since the early 1990s.”

Mr. Speaker, I did not hear a question, but I can say that doctors have reached out who are sharing legitimate concerns about this bill. Again, we as Conservatives agree on the mental illness stuff. We have been leading the charge on that. My colleague sitting right beside me, with Bill C-218, has led the charge on that, so there is no debate regarding that. The debate is regarding the safeguards that are needed. Irrespective of what members’ beliefs are and what side they are on, it is our duty as parliamentarians to make sure that safeguards are in place to protect the most vulnerable. That is where we stand.
